Featuring imagery from Michelangelo Barberi’s micromosaic masterpiece Chronological Rome (1851), these earrings preserve a glimpse of St. Peter’s Square during the Papal inauguration of Pius IX. Barberi, celebrated as one of the 19th century’s finest mosaicists, was known for his astonishing precision and color — qualities that make this miniature scene feel alive even today.
The original mosaic table, commissioned by Viscount Midleton and later part of the Bernard Castro Collection, combined vignettes of Rome’s most storied landmarks — the Pantheon, the Coliseum, and the Roman Forum — encircled by laurel wreaths, Imperial eagles, and portraits of emperors.
Each earring is handcrafted in my Brooklyn studio, preserving the imagery beneath layers of resin and finished with gold fill ear wires. A wearable tribute to Barberi’s exquisite craftsmanship and the eternal grandeur of Rome.
