This necklace features one of the central figures from Pietro da Cortona’s Allegory of Divine Providence and Barberini Power, painted between 1632–1639 on the ceiling of the grand salon of the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII and the influential Barberini family, the fresco is considered one of the defining masterpieces of High Baroque illusionistic painting.

The seated female figure shown here represents Divine Providence itself, the guiding force around which the vast composition unfolds. Positioned high above the viewer amidst clouds and radiant light, she gestures upward while presiding over the glorification of the Barberini dynasty. Around her, allegorical figures, virtues, and symbols of triumph swirl through the painted architecture in a theatrical merging of heaven, mythology, and political power.

Pietro da Cortona designed the fresco to dissolve the boundaries of the ceiling, creating the illusion that the heavens have opened above the room. This approach became enormously influential in Baroque decorative painting, where movement, light, and allegory were used to overwhelm the senses and communicate authority, divinely sanctioned rule, and spectacle.

Collector’s Notes:
I love how this fragment still carries the immense scale of the original ceiling painting. Even reduced to something intimate and wearable, the figure retains that upward movement and sense of radiance that makes Baroque frescoes feel almost alive overhead.
